Look, sometimes it's fun to just play out something completely sappy and self-indulgent. So let's do that here! This meme is for fluff and hurt/comfort stuff, shippy or not; AU, game setting, whatever.

Prose or brackets welcome; prompts below are just for kickstarting ideas if necessary, so don't worry about those if you've got something else in mind or just want to work things out separately. Let me know if you want to start something here, since I have it set up not to email me.

It's been quite a while since Grant has been to the zoo; as much as he'd like to bring Chip over more often, time and money tend to be in short supply, so it's not usually an option.

Today, though, they've finally got an opportunity - and Grant has a plan.

...Well, sort of. It's not really a step-by-step thing so much as it's "get Shiro and Chip onto neutral ground and hope for the best". But it's a plan.

"Alright, where to first?" Grant looks over at his two companions, keeping a hand resting gently on Chip's shoulder for the time being.

Chip feels a bit like they were tricked into this whole outing. They love the zoo, and seeing all the animals here, but Shiro is...complicated. They want to hate him, but he's been nothing but kind, even to something like them. And he makes Grant happy. And his jokes are funny and he's never actually tried to hurt them yet...

The entire trip over they've been quiet, only giving one word answers and refusing to look in Shiro's direction. Here at the zoo they're glued to Grant's side, one hand curled tightly into the fabric of their dad's shirt. They look up at him, then around with a scowl they're determined to keep in place.

"...can we go to the bears?"

A least they're in generally the same space without one of them panicking, or trying to claw the other's face off. It's nice. Not a bad day to be out, either. And with the glove over his hand, the jacket over the rest of him... he looks normal.

Though he hasn't tried to touch either of them yet. For obvious reasons.

"Bears sound great to me." There's no trace of placating or anything in his words -- he sounds like he'd genuinely like to go, himself. "I haven't been here in a long time."

Grant, meanwhile, is trying very hard not to let slip any sign of amusement at Chip's obvious efforts to look unhappy. "Sounds like a plan."

He looks over the surrounding signs before nodding in the direction they need to go and starting forward with a quiet laugh. "Seems like it's been a while for all of us. Hopefully we won't manage to get lost, huh?"

"I won't!" Chip blurts it out in an almost whine that they immediately regret, gaze flicking to Shiro before they lower their head and follow along with Grant. "I can...I can read the maps."

"I'm glad one of us can."

He caught that look. And now it's time for something like damage control. Deflecting. Putting himself on display instead of calling attention to Chip's outburst.

"I always end up with them upside-down. That's why I'm not a navigator."

But thankfully there's big signs directing people in the right direction. The bears are easy enough to locate.

Grant gives Chip's shoulder a light pat, quietly acknowledging their catching their own outburst. He also glances thankfully at Shiro for that effort at damage control. "Yeah, Chip's pretty much the one who gets us around."

Once they find the right area, Grant goes to lean on the railing, looking over the informational plaques affixed nearby. "Here we go... hey, looks like they've got black bears here."

Still flustered from their mistake, Chip just nods and keeps close to Grant's side, though a little bit of the tension in their shoulders leaves with Grant's gesture.

Once they reach the enclosure, it takes only a nervous glance between their dad and Shiro before Chip rushes to the railing, climbing up one rung to get a better view down below. "Dad, they're over there! Look!"

"Glad they're here to help."

He means it. Sincerely. Hopefully that comes across.

But also, there's bears to look at. He leans forward on Grant's other side, what he figures is an appropriate distance from them, but still close enough. He can't help but grin at Chip's reaction, though.

"How many of them do they have in there?"

"Looks like... two, I think."

Grant smiles, glancing between Shiro and Chip. With Chip on his other side, he briefly wonders if he could get away with holding onto Shiro's hand for a moment here, but he... guesses he probably shouldn't. Just in case.

Chip is focused enough on the animals that a display like that might pass them right by, but given how volatile they can get it's probably for the best. They frown and lean forward ever further, squinting their eyes to look in the shadows beneath the trees in the enclosure.

"Wasn't there three last time? Is one hiding?"

For now, he'll settle for just being next to Grant. It's more than enough.

"Maybe one's seeing the vet."

Animals had to do that from time to time, right? Or they just didn't want to come out and say hi. At least that was how the lion house operated.

Of course he knows how the lion house operated.

"Could be. Might be at the vet, hiding, just staying inside today..." He watches a bear haul itself up one of the enclosure's sturdier trees. "If we see one of the keepers maybe we could ask."

Chip frowns, a little worried, and straightens up a little to look over at the openings into the shelters. "Maybe...what can bears get sick with, anyway? People can't give them colds, can they?"

"I don't know, really. I'm... more familiar with big cats."

He'd make that a joke if it wasn't so painfully true. Instead he just leans on the rail a bit more Thoughtfully.

"But yeah, if we see someone, we can ask."

"I don't think they can... I'm no bear expert either, though."

He smiles down at Chip. "It'll probably be fine, either way. From what I hear, they've got some good vets working here."

"...okay. Good. They need to be taken care of." Chip doesn't know much about animal care other than providing a soft spot to sleep and making sure they eat and drink plenty. They never really had medicine to give to any of the strays they collected.

Now that the issue of sick bears has been addressed (at least as much as it can be without leaving), they settle back down a bit to watch the bears amble about and sniff up into the tree branches. Their expression settles into a small smile, and they giggle a bit when one of the bears knocks down a small branch (and becomes very offended by this happening to it).

"They will be. I'm sure."

He's got a lot of faith in the zoos, after all. It's nice. It feels like this is something normal. Something regular people can do without worrying about the world ending or monsters breaking down the doors.

And you know what? When Chip starts giggling, he can't help the laugh in response. They really should be able to laugh more. It's good to hear it.

"Man, me too, bear. You tell that branch."

Grant grins, glancing between the two. Even if it's just for a moment, it's nice to see them doing something resembling getting along.

"Kinda reminds me of me that time I tried to fix a chair on my own. But, y'know, with less glue everywhere."
